Parents are the most influential role models in a young child's life because obviously, they raise the child from birth. The child learns habits, speech patterns, the 'rights and wrongs' of society etc from them - or whoever else raises the child, which is why parents are generally considered a collosal factor in a child's life as they usually are the ones who raise the child.
Secondly, you could also argue that the children look to parents as a role model, etc etc. Many children choose to follow in the footsteps of their parents, though some may choose other paths BECAUSE of their parents wanting them to choose a certain path - also being a huge influence, but in a different way.
Children are dependent on parents for a huge portion of their lives. Even if they live to be 70 or so, that means that around 1/7 - 2/7 of their lives are lived dependant off their parents. The children that choose to rebel are rebelling AGAINST their parents, ergo, parents are once again, a huge influence.
Then there is the whole idea about DNA so on and so forth, but I really can't be bothered to wiki it. ANYWAY. Best of luck! (I hope that this isn't late and you've already done your eng thingomabob?)
